Default DMCA - We all should read it

This I think is something everyone of us should read because if we are in this business or hobby long enough we will eventually find a thief.

http://www.copyright.gov/legislation/dmca.pdf

Maybe this should be made "sticky"??

DMCA - We should all support abolishing it.

Unfortunately, the DMCA is bad legislation. It added no legitimate protections that weren't already covered, and botched the digital portion of it so badly as to be deliberate. There's not many things that I consider evil, and the DMCA is one of them.

+1 on this. Completely concur. This seems like one of thoe things written for the express wishes of the music and motion picture industry. Like those guys who were trying to copy movies they OWNED onto their linux machines so they could watch them later. That violated the dmca. What?
DMCA was like Circuit City's DIVX - A bad idea, poorly executed.

+1.

There's nothing in the DMCA that truly protects the copyright creator. And unfortunately everybody else seems hell-bent on copying the damned thing.

I suppose, though, that if you have to deal with it...

Well suppose we shouldn't do anything about it. Always easier to complain about the rules rather than work to change them.

This is what happens when we do nothing about other than b^tch

copyright violation HELP!

The good news its ONLY 18 pages, too bad the health care law was not 18 pages, then maybe the asses in DC would have read it before they voted it in.

I could not agree more. I think this one I linked is the "abridged" version. I am sure the bill required an assistant to carry it, they always do. Couldn't they attach something that is useful like free lunch for everyone? Better yet free beer!

You're right, and I usually hate to do that. I don't like to complain without suggestion a solution, so I really should have added this in before:

Support the EFF, and tell your congress person that you don't believe in protecting the rights of dead people and media distributors at the cost of the good of society.

I'm willing to tolerate the idea of a copyright period, but it needs to be short. We need to cut all public funding for the arts and go back to patronage type arts support. If you can't convince the general public that your creations have enough value to live off of, then they just don't.

Why is it that we readily accept that for thousands of years, art, science, and industry was all privately funded through the upper class, and yet now, when we have the largest amounts of disposable income in the private sector of all time, having to convince people your art actually has value is suddenly offensive.

Agreed, there is always unintended side effects that the people passing the law did not intend but clever lawyers make it fit their situation.

An example, a printer manufacturer argued that since their toner cartridge had a chip in it that did reporting on the state of the cartridge the third party copy (that was 1/3rd the price) was violating the DCMA.

Now that is just ridiculous. I am sure that was throw out as frivolous or at least one would hope. It amazes me the stuff we waste our courts time with when we should be doing this to better our country instead we are bogged down with this garbage.

I don't think tax payers should have to pay to give these frivolous lawsuits a day in court. Not one penny.
