Default Tiff or Jpeg

I've have a professional photographer friend who shoots RAW but saves in Tiff.

He says that its more stable and images don't degrade.

I've started doing this as well. Although I've been shooting in RAW for over 12 months, I always saved in Jpeg. Has anyone any thoughts on this.

Cheers,

John W

For me it is JPG only for the net, or emailing.
Otherwise Tiff or PSD

That's the beauty of Lightroom for me. I only store the RAWs of all images but when I finish processing I save it in whatever format I need to use it in. Could be PSD, could be Jpeg, could be tiff... depends if I'm giving to client, printing, saving for PS editing.. so it really depends what your output goal is.
So.. what is it?

Where did that label come from?

I don't put many photos on line, I'll eaither save them locally or burn a CD for family or friends or one I use for work get saved as large jpegs for brochures or emialing to clients.

Cheers,

What do you mean by "label"? Do you mean my profile photo? If so, it's a self portrait.

If not, then I'm not sure what you mean?

As for what you use them for, I think full-sized full quality Jpegs will be enough for how you're using your images.

I never give anything other than Jpegs to a client as they're unlikely to know what to do with anything else.

fam and friends really don't need more than Jpegs. So I think you can live off of jpegs right now.

If you send a TIFF file to a friend with no photo-related software or anything installed on their computer, will they be able to open it?

I save files that I'm working on, like collages that haven't been approved by a client, as PSD files.

If someone sends me JPG files, which I no longer accept from second shooters, I save them as TIFFs just to differentiate them from other JPG files.

The only time I use JPG is:

- when I am generating proofs for my website (These get deleted from my machine immediately after upload)

- when I'm preparing final images for print (These get deleted once the order comes back from the lab)

- when I'm preparing images to share online (I'm less strict about deleting these, so every few weeks I search my system for any .jpg files and delete everything that doesn't belong to a program or the OS.)

So, with the exception of my first year or so with a DSLR when I unfortunately shot JPG only, and one set of photos from a second shooter that worked for me in '09, all my originals are .nef files.

I shoot in RAW DNG. (not all cameras can make DNG in-camera so you will need an external converter) All my files are saved as DNG. If I'm posting to the web I make a JPG copy, if I send work to a lab its TIFF. If you would like to know more about DNG...link

From the thread...are TIFF files more stable and don't degrade?? What is the advantage?
