Default Tragic Loss on the water

Went white water rafting today with my son's school class. Lots of fun and had my neat little Olympus waterproof camera with me to capture all the fun. I had the wrist strap clipped into the lifevest strap so I wouldn't accidentally drop it, it hung handily down the front of me. Unfortunately while being pulled back onto the raft after an unexpected dip the strap broke and the camera was gone. I noticed it missing fairly soon but we were past the spot, a couple of the other rafts had a look but it was gone.
Not sure what I'm most annoyed/upset/disappointed/gutted about - the loss of a really handy & not-cheap camera or the loss of the photos that were on it.
The darn thing was waterproof, shockproof and coldproof but didn't float - a design flaw in my opinion!

Bummer! I hate it when things like that happen. It sounds like you had fun apart from that though. Lucky you to be able to go with your son's class.

My sister dropped her water-proof camera in a lake, though it was only $150, and we got it out as it was about 7ft deep. But still, if you design a camera to be around or even in it, it should float.

The thread name suggests that someone passed away, while I am sorry for your loss its just a material possession and eventually replaceable. The images lost however thats going to have to hurt.

Sorry if I alarmed you I guess its not that tragic all things considered but I'm pretty peeved about it. Hopefully insurance will replace the camera although the photos are lost forever.
On the bright side - at least it wasn't my DSLR that went in the drink!

Sorry about your loss, but I too thought it was a person or animal.

For the next camera, you might want to consider a steel cable strap.

The camera itself might not float, but when we picked up one of those for my dad who snorkels on occasion, we also got him a floating strap Amazon.com: Olympus STRAP FLOAT ORANGE: Camera & Photo Might be an idea if you decide to pick up another waterproof camera

Thanks for that suggestion Nicole. I will definitely be replacing it with another waterproof camera as that feature gets a lot of use. The floating strap looks like a good idea.
