getting sued by the Copyright holders of the © symbol for use of their property... lololol

i dont think you'll get in trouble for using it any more than writing a $ sign in front of a number.
i'm really tempted to post this.... but i wont.

good you're considering it though.

it's all about selling the writes to the picture, if you want to distort the image such that it's not usable in a digital fashion, use non transparent writing all over it, this will basically remove any approachable ability to manipulate the digital copy of the image unless they purchase the useage rights of the image from you directly.

other than that, don't give out digitial copies of your work and make folks pay to have prints.

Absolutely watermark with the © symbol and your name or name of business. Put the watermark somewhere it'll distort the image if it's printed and it cannot be cropped out. Don't put anything but lo-res pictures out there.

All watermarks can be removed, the harder you make it the less value it has as a demonstration of your work. I would change the advice above to "Don't put anything of value out there"

To answer to your original question: "How can I easily prevent people from stealing my pictures when I share them online?"

You can't, if you don't want others to use them do not put them online, end of story.

You also have to embed that info into your photograph in the copyright section. In photoshop go to File, then File Info. In the ITPC or XMP info section there's info you should fill out.
Description, IPTC Contact, IPTC Content, IPTC Status, Origin. There's a section in the Description section that says Copyright. That's where the, © 2010, your name, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED should go. Then go to Origin and fill out the Instruction box, warning those that steal the photo, they will be fined.

Here's what mine says, but you can find many versions on the internet.

"Thank you for respecting my intellectual property rights. These images are for your personal viewing may not be published, shared, or re-used in any way without written permission from the Photographer." No third party usage. If you violate the intellectual property you will be liable for: actual damages, loss of income, and profits you derive from the use of these images, and, where appropriate, the costs of collection and/or statutory damages up to $150,000 (USD) or MINIMUM USAGE PER IMAGE: $300.00. But if I sell them limited rights then I put in those rights I sold them. Such as One-time North American Publication rights. No International Rights usage.

Or it for Web.......Three months web usage allowed.

Basically, what rights you grant them must be in a contract that's signed by both parties
and those rights embed in each photo sent to them.
