Default Regarding "crop frame" sensors and Perspective

Ok, take a 50mm lens for instance. It's regarded as the typical "normal" focal length on a full frame sensor/35mm film.

But on a crop frame camera, a 50mm lens has the field of view comparable to ~80mm or so on a full frame. But does this affect the perspective the lens gives? As in, does it change the relative distances like changing between an exaggerated wide angle and a compressed-together telephoto does? Would 50mm on a crop frame have the same perceived distances as ~80mm on a full frame, or is it as simple as taking the 50mm image and cropping off the edges?

I'm under the assumption that only the field of view changes, and not perspective... and I'm realizing the limitations of this. For instance, I'm getting acclimated to my new-ish 11-16mm... And to get the same scene in view compared to 20-something mm on a full frame, I'd have to sacrifice by having even more exaggerated distances. So a photo that would be perfect on a full frame could be less than perfect on a comparable lens on crop frame, as the background would then be too far away/too small.

.........Right?

Correct, perspective characteristics don't change.

Oh god PLEASE dont be starting the whole "perspective" argument again. The search function should net you a few very very long argumentative answers.

Heh, sorry.... I didn't realize this is something that could be argued much about

Seems a pretty clear-cut answer to me... I'm a beginner, and I pretty much figured it out on my own from various bits of knowledge, some observations, and common sense. I was just making sure I was correct from you more experienced and knowledgeable folks.

I'm going to have to search some of those threads out...

In the spirit of curbing arguments, and spreading correct knowledge among new folks:

This thread was very helpful in clarifying the issue for me.

I was starting to get confused reading various sources, until I read through that... The reality and the reasons behind it get clearly spelled out, instead of generalizations and such.

The end.

Oh, some people can always find something to argue about. Back in my dialup BBS days, I was a member of a BBS which had an entire sub-board ostensibly dedicated to a rather spirited debate over crunchy cereal vs. soggy cereal. Somehow, it eventually devolved into a debate over Married With Children vs. Blossom.
