Default flickr question

What's the best file format to use (or the best way to ensure best picture quality) when uploading pictures to flickr? I've been noticing a loss of picture quality when uploading to my thread, yet I look at other peoples pictures and they look awesome.

what exactly is the loss of quality? sharpness? colour?

are you uploading RGB or sRGB ?
an RGB file will look desaturated, especially in the reds when online...
so best to use sRGB

thats all i can think of right now.

What software are you using?

I use Lightroom and export in sRGB @ 300dpi.

in photoshop elements
Edit > convert colour profile > sRGB

not my pic, random image from internetz

when displaying online, i downsize to around 800pixels on the longest side, and use the ""bicubic sharper" resample to retain the sharpness. I save it as 72 DPI to keep file size down.. and this is for web only so dpi doesnt make a difference to the sharpness online, it only has an effect on the print.

i also have my camera set to shoot straight to sRGB, and only if i do a large print, or canvass do i go to RGB

The color space setting (Adobe RGB or sRGB) is not set within flickr, you can either make a conversion using a photo edition software or within your camera.

I do not know what type of camera are you using, but you should be able to set the color space to sRGB via camera menu. By doing that all the photos will be taken with that color space.

Now, that could boost a little bit the color saturation when you upload the photos to flickr but if your issue is sharpness lossing maybe you should check other settings on your photos like: resolution settings (image size), noise reduction, image quality, etc.

So far, I have not seen any degradation when uploading my photos or when my friends/colleagues upload their photos to flickr, in fact, IMHO the flickr is the best photo hosting site regarding photo quality keeping.

Cheers!
