Default Cs5?

I don't know a lot about photosoftware, I currently use Corel Paintshop Pro photo x3. While I'm still learning it does seem to work fine - but really hard to get tutorials. So it takes me many many steps to get the processing I desire. Adobe seems to have more help online with less steps to accomplish something. Or so it seems to me.
There is a lot of talk about CS5 now. My son told me he can buy me this at college with his discount. So we looked at the bookstore online and I'm not sure what to do. I'd like to buy this soon as he graduates in December!
What is the difference between Photoshop Extended CS5 V12 and CS5 Design Standard V5?
I tried to look at the Adobe website and really couldn't tell which one I should buy?
Anyone with any help - I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!!!!!

Photoshop CS5 is just that only. The Creative Suite includes other products:

Creative Suite 5 Design Standard
Photoshop CS5 Extended
Illustrator CS5
InDesign CS5
Acrobat 9 Pro
Bridge CS5
Device Central CS5

Unless you would have a need for the other products, purchasing CS5 alone would be just perfect.

So purchasing the CS5 Design Standard comes with all that stuff? I can't imagine needing that much more; I currenlty take a lot of senior pictures and family portraits. I do landscapes, but not for sale unless a friends wants one. I don't advertise that. I'm not a professional, just enthusiast at this point.

So I would "guess" buying just the photoshop extended CS5 would suite me just fine? Unless someone can recommend something different? These were on the list at his college library? (Told you I don't know a lot about software! )

Photoshop CS5 is a great program and you can certainly grow into what it offers. The only other thing that I would add would Lightroom. You might not even open up Photoshop and can manage everything in Lightroom. I'm certain they have a bundle available to him that is Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom. I didn't have a college level academic discount and purchased a CS4/Lightroom bundle for less than $400. Higher education discount would have been even more of a savings. I can't wait for my kids to get to college

I don't recommend the suite unless you are going to design albums.

I use what is called "white rabbit". It's actually the pre-release of CS5. I like this version because there is no install to it. It just sits of a flash drive. So, whatever computer I happen to be on at the time has Photoshop CS5. I just pop in the flash drive and badda-bing! it's got CS5 on it.

Batgirl, BE AWARE --- I read that the student version can only be installed on ---ONE---- Computer. Since I have a Mac ProBook as well, I just bought mine. I recently went to CS5 after years of using CS2-- I am not versed in PS, but suggest Scott Kelby's new book on it, unless you are an expert- me? I need all the help I can get. GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks! He can bundle - both would be $248. (photoshop & lightroom). I don't need the design as I don't think I will be "designing" anything. It's already a large enough learning curve learning all the photography stuff!

I have my laptop for photo stuff ONLY. No one can use my computer because of that.(guess that sounds sort of mean, but there are other computers in the house - The spouse has his own laptop and my two son's share the desktop unit.) I don't think only being able to install it on one computer should be a problem then.

Also - I'll check out that book - I am by a FAR an Expert on any of this! But I am having FUN learning! Thanks!

Hey, that reminds me - I still have a copy of White Rabbit stored on a flash drive - tucked away somewhere since I bought CS5 and installed on my desktop to replace PS7.
Gotta find it so I can use it on my laptop. actually I was under the impression that it would be expired by now, since it was a pre-release.
