Default Gotta hand it to Nikon

.... I used a combo of AB800's and speed lights over the weekend with a few cars and just my luck, I missed picking one up before telling the cars to move and one of my SB600's got run over by a 3,700lbs car.

Sonnovabish if it didn't still work! The batter door cover fell off, the red IR cover smashed into 10 pieces and the lower half plastic is all fux0r'd but it still powers up and pops just like new.

I'll get a pic of the damage up when I get back.

Here's a sample the shoot i was on.

Send a picture with the story to Nikon: they might send you a new one or something else!

On the weekend I slogged up a prodigious hill, got to a rocky area at the top, and, in a rare moment of sanity, thought 'Put your camera in the bag before you clamber up here'. Clambering done, I took a breather, then gathered myself to take some shots. I got up and out flew my (Nikon) camera from the (unclipped) bag, from a height of about 3 feet.

The whole thing hit a rock and the lens flew off, breaking the retaining clips, but the camera body has literally not a single mark on it and the lens, though a little wobbly, still clipped in and took some decent shots. When I got back I epoxied the clips back in place and it's as good as new. Autofocus works fine and aperture control is uncompromised; the only evidence it was dropped is a tiny mark on the VR switch. Go Nikon!

This also reminds me of a story my dad trots out every so often. He had one of those basic, cheap, black rubber Casio digital watches back in the 80s, and one day lost it. Two years later, tramping through the field behind our house, he found it in a puddle; it hadn't lost a minute. Darn it if the Japanese don't build stuff to last!

I have an SB600 that's in near perfect shape except the capicitor won't charge.

I would send it to Nikon.
It reminds me of an incident when I was roofing with a guy in WA State.
He was tacking tar paper down and slipped. As he went over the edge of the building he stuck his hammer out and it caught on the edge of the truss. He hung for about 20 secs as I got the ladder under him. I was laughing so hard afterwards from him hanging there holding onto his hammer. I though "what a great headline. Man saved by "Stanley". We never sent it in to Stanley, and I regret it. LOL

I knocked my SB-600 of the stand and it hit the asphalt from 7' - still powered up but wouldn't fire. Sold it on ebay for $60 and bought a SB-80dx. Like that flash better anyway lol

A battered and bruised device that still charges a 500 volt capacitor...sounds like a good deal to me. Try not to stand in a puddle when using it.
