Default Opium for babies?

One of my friends was cleaning out her mom's medicine cabinet to get rid of old prescription drugs at drop off that her local police station was having.
She found a container of something called Paregoric.
After google searching she found out that it was a household remedy in the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was widely used to control diarrhea in adults and children, an expectorant and cough medicine, calm fretful children, and to rub on the gums to counteract the pain from teething. In the 20th century its use declined as governments regulated it.

The principal active ingredient in Paregoric is powdered opium.
So back in the day, people got their babies high on opium to get them to sleep? WOW! Is it a wonder that drug addiction is such a huge problem in our society. Apparently it is in our DNA.
Anyways, it got me thinking, did you ever use a weird remedy on your kids when they were babies?
I never did, but my mother used to give me whiskey to get me to sleep when I was a baby. It is a wonder that I am so normal now and stuff

When I was breastfeeding I had the odd glass of wine now and again and I think it affected my milk because the baby would sleep for hours......

Apart from that ear plugs worked too.

My mom still suggests paragoric for a teething baby... of course I don't think they have that anymore. I'm sure she didn't know the ingredients!

Has no one heard of the "scotch on the gums" for a teething baby before?

Yup, I tell my kids to put whiskey on the babies gums all the time.

You all have to remember there was a day when even Heroin was legal and was actually used by doctors.
