Default I said it!

I said the words "I am a photographer" out loud to someone else yesterday for the first time. LOL!
Our house kind of sits down a pocket. Hills going up surround our home with very very tall trees that block the view of the tops of the surrounding mountains. So last night when I wanted to shot the harvest moon. I had to go set up along the road that runs through our subdivision in order to get a clear view of the moon rising over the mountain.
This man was driving by on his ATV, yes people ride ATVs on the roads here, it is West Virginia. Anyways, he stopped and was curious about what I was doing. I said "I am a photographer" and explained to him what was about to happen with the moon.
It was kind of surreal to say that out loud. I guess that I am a photographer, amatuer, hobbyist, aspiring to be a professional someday in the future, but still a photographer.
I suppose that I need to start saying those words more often to get comfortable with the title.
Does all of this make sense to anyone else?

Good for you! I still haven't plucked up the courage to utter those 4 words yet for fear of the repercussions

Well done, Nicole.

So far, I've only managed to answer "Yes", when asked by my daughter's friend, "Are you a photographist?"
I have yet to own up to being a photographer.

I don't tell anyone that I'm a photographer... Because I'm not.

Labels only serve to negate.

If people ask me in general I say I am a hobbyist photographer. If it involves money I tell them I am a semi-pro photographer. If it involves a wedding I tell them I'm a computer consultant.

Then what is this from your website?

Here are a few things I’ve learned from 15 years of car show experience and working as a freelance automotive photographer and writer.

You're working as one, but you're not REALLY one?
And you're a writer? That's a label...........

Good try, but not quite.

I'm working "as" a photographer and writer, that was my role at the time. I'm not a photographer, that's now who I am. Just as I'm not a billion other roles I've played in my life. I'm not my career either, although I'm quite happy with it, it doesn't define me.

Just as when I'm in my car, I'm a "driver" but when I exit the vehicle I'm a "pedestrian" and no longer a "driver".... it's transient.

Labels are pointless.

Right.... Like it or not, your website is LOADED with labels about yourself. You can't escape it. You can try to deny it, but intelligent people know better.
Words like "friend, I can be a jerk, I was the only photographer on the track., live with my beautiful wife.... It's funny you have a wife, but you're not a husband? I suppose you're not a Dad or a Father either?
Whatever.
