Newbie Query about posting images

Sorry if this is obvious / has been posted before but I have looked for the answer - honest! It seems whenever I try to attach an image to my post, it only shows up as a thumbnail. How do I get those beautiful big attachments that everyone else has? Is it dependent on the size of the shot I am attaching?

The attachments show up as thumbnails which you can click on to see the larger image.

If you're talking about big images posted in the post itself, most people do those through a hosting site like Photobucket, Flickr, Picasa, or their own web servers.
