Yeah, I get that a little bit. What bothers me more is when someone takes a photo that is out of focus and thinks that it is wonderful and they should be a professional (aka my sister)

There's some mentality that a photograph means everything is in focus. A lot of people I've known who think this, believe it because of the old point and shoot film cameras with small apertures and therefore basically infinite focus.

Hell, I've even been to an art show recently with a painting based on a photograph, and the main point made by the painter what that the painting was "odd" compared to the photograph because although it had the same point of view and contents, he had feathered the entire thing so it was blurry and therefore unlike a photograph which "are always completely shartp."

We all have different tastes. One person buys fresh flowers, while another likes plastic plants!

Honestly, the only times I get something like that is:
A. when my focus is actually off
B. when the "subject" of the image isn't strong enough to capture the viewer

I've never had a complaint about it, my clients seem to love bokeh/shallow DOF/whatever you wanna call it, lol. What I usually get is "I LOVE how my daughter/son/whoever just pops out against the blurry background, how do you do that?"

I just smile and say it's all about photographic technique and I'm happy that they love the photo, I see no reason to explain shallow DOF to them, and they're more than happy with that answer. I actually tried to explain it to a friend of mine once, after I had done a session of her daughter. Her eyes just glazed over and she said, "Whatever....I just love it." So I don't bother explaining anymore, haha.

I've heard this once, on a shot I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Now remember I shoot wildlife mainly and recently had a person wanting to purchase a print of a local bird. For me it was the perfect shot, only the bird and the branch it was on in perfect focus and an absolutely clean OOF green background. The lady said she loved the shot and would buy it if the background was in focus. I just stood there dumbfounded not knowing what to say. The gallery owner stepped in and said that would be no problem that I could go out and get her the shot she wanted, but the price would double. She actually signed a buyer agreement, but it's been three months and I haven't seen one of those birds again.
