I have a Nikkor VS 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. I just recently put on the 55-200mm for the first time and I don't like it! Maybe its not good for indoor shots because the zoom is way too close, and I can't get what I want in the frame. Plus I cant seem to get it to focus right. Is this lens mainly used outdoors?

I am a Canon shooter.
I normally have a Canon 24-105 F4 IS L mounted on a full frame body. However my other bodies will have whatever it takes to do the job. A 55-200mm f/4-5.6 is an outdoor good light telephoto lens, great for landscapes and picking out details and possibly head shots when used wide open.. It is too slow for an available light, hand held, indoor lens. What were you wanting to use your new lens for?

Both of your lenses are outdoor lenses for the most part. Highly recommend reading this description of maximum aperture. The focal length of a lens is not its only important feature. There's a reason they put the maximum aperture in the lens description.

A low light zoom is BIG money - 24-70 is the least you need If you want to shoot low light indoor, get you paws on a 50mm 1,8 or a 35mm F1.8. Both are great value and stock equipment for many people. More often than not, that would be my canon 24-70mm f2.8L...it's my friend!

On the Canon 40D its the 18-55 or sometimes it's the 50 1.8 and on the 550D its my old faitful Tamron 28-300mm.
I'm saving for the 24-70 2.8L at the moment and should be able to get it pretty soon. My husband is going to Germany possibly until the end of the year so he owes me big time leaving me home alone with 2 brats

The 50 1.4 and 100 2.0 divide their time equally on my camera, unless I am shooting football.

I have both of these, and find I rarely use the smaller one, but use the 55-200 mostly as I often take photos of my sons playing football, good for outdoors, sports and scenery pics
My sister also has the same , but like you she prefers the smaller one. |
