You see now - THAT's the way to check it out! get someone to sponsor it to you, and take it to some exotic location like Peru!
I'll be keeping an eye out for your report!

Onesaint: I'm sorry I didn't thank you for the "head's up" that Samy's has the SLK tripod - I meant to write, but got interrupted, and didn't get back to it. Thank you for the input. I tend to avoid Samy's, 'cause I became a little too familiar with the "careful who you talk to there" thing. They're the biggest name in town, so I guess they feel they can act any way they want. Left a really bad taste in my mouth - BUT, if I can take advantage of them for a good, light, CHEAP tripod, I may reconsider!
I love the idea that you could carry it on your pack, and not feel the added weight. I wonder if I can use the new Manfrotto head I just got with it, instead of the head it comes with (that didn't seem fun). At least I don't work this weekend - gives me a chance to go shopping! Thanks!

thats the whole point of threads like this people with common interests helping each other! i love it. ok...so, unfortunately you cannot change the head. it just something you have to live with. with that you get what you pay for. but i think they make one that doesnt flip, one sec... yeah its the sdv-20 but it will only hold a max of 3.3lbs. the 550 version i think will hold a normal camera. i would suggest going in and having a look. they weigh about 2 lbs. on the other side manfrotto's carbon fiber is light and professional. expensive as well.

I LOVE that you made me wait a second, while you looked it up. No problem - I'm ever so patient!
![]() So, it appears that sdv-20's strong enough to hold my D40, with my heaviest lens (so far), but if I ever upgrade to a bigger camera or buy big, fancy lenses, I'd need a new tripod. 'Course, if I could afford big fancy lenses, I'd probably not be worrying about finding a cheap lightweight tripod. Today, I did try to carry my tripod just tucked into the side of my camera waist bag. This was not a good idea. On my waist, it felt heavy, and uncomfortable - and it got in my way. So, my experiment with trying to carry a tripod to see if I liked the new Manfrotto quick release was a no-go. 'Course, I still haven't weighed the tripod I own, but the 2lbs you mention for this SLK one doesn't sound like too much. Definitely - tomorrow - going shopping. Also, I might try the camera show at the Pasadena Elks lodge. Last time I was there, there seemed to be some people selling tripods...
