Can it be fixed?

I am new in photography and am limited right now in editing. A friend of mine took this photo of my son, it turned out relatively well. Its a great photo of him but the sun on his face is so distracting. Is there a way to fix this?

It can be softened by overlaying a soft yellow in that area, but...

for such harsh lighting... The light has to be correct. It's still a decent photo, just a little hot on the right side...

Spot metering on that side of his face may have done the trick.
Or, fill flash on the other side of his face would have worked better...

there is a way or should i say several ways, but you have to learn photoshop.
