It sounds like there has been no loss of life. Two men seriously injured. Luckily our building codes are such that not too many houses have fallen down.

Big Earthquake. I think 7.0. Correct me if I am wrong.

7.1 magnitude earthquake near Christchurch - one of our biggest cities. A number of buildings have been damaged, roads buckled and power and water out.

Hi all ... this morning there was a 7.4 magnitude earthquake at 4:35 am
I have just had power restored but it felt like someone picked up my house and gave it a good shake luckily my section of the city was not too badly affected but other parts of the city have had quite serious damage ... as I type there are still aftershocks but not as frequent nor scary as they were

I cannot get out with the camera as we have all been told to stay indoors and a state of emergency has been declared but will hopefully venture out later

I live 30km from epicentre and quake was 10km deep aparently that is a very shallow quake

Terrible news. It's a miracle that there was no loss of life. You have your excellent building codes to thank for that.

Yeah they have been pretty quick to point out without our building codes things would have been alot worse ... tho looking at what happened in city centre and Kaiapoi it has been quite substantial

As I say I hope to be able to get out later but with SOE in place there is no chance at present
