Default Preparing for a hurricane

Today has been a rare leisurely day of just goofing off around the house and not really doing anything productive. My wife came home from having to visit her work place and informed me that I needed to start preparing for what is either going to be a tropical storm or hurricane that is going to hit the island.

My first response was, wow I didn't even know about it as I've just been reading a book most of the day. So I quickly started preparing for the storm. About thirty minutes later, my wife entered my home office and asked me what I was doing. My answer was, I'm preparing for the hurricane.
Here is the point we had a difference of opinion, her idea of preparing was for me to check around the yard to see if there were any items that could turn into possible cannon balls and go through windows. Also check the status of stored water and other emergency items.

My idea of being prepared was to start charging every camera battery, flash battery, finding my rain gear for both me and the camera. Just generally getting ready to shoot and expecting there will be no power to charge things later.

Yea, I did do the tasks the wife meant, after everything was in the chargers.

Just remember, the correct answer is almost always, "Yes, Dear."

(Almost always, because once in a while, she'll ask if something makes her look fat, just to see if I'm paying attention.)

(The correct answer, in that case, is NEVER, "Everything makes you look fat.")

Dude! That is my exact method of getting prepared when we are expecting a snow storm. We tend to lose electricity very easily when it snows here. We do make sure we have enough supplies (food, water, gas for the generator) but we also make sure everything is properly charged.

I guess were always as prepared for a hurricane as you can get. Got all the shutters hanging in the garage, every spring I fill up my six 5 gallon cans of gas for the generator, and our pantry is packed with canned food, and water. Lots of flash light batteries too.

As far as all my camera batteries, I pretty much charge them after each shoot.

We had over head blown out choppy waves today from Danielle. I paddled out for a while, by the time I caught 2 waves, I'd drifted a half mile up the damn beach.

Earl is looking promising for us as far as waves.

Well I guess I'm as ready as can be, now we see what happens.
When snow storms hit in places like W. Va. or from where I'm originally from, Va, power is lost due to ice or heavy snow taking down power lines. Here the power can get turned off everywhere as a preventive measure, and if like the last time it happened we had no storm activity in our area I'm wondering why they cut my power.

During the last major storm I went out driving around during a lull in the storm. It was amazing as that is the only time I've ever seen PR without cars and people everywhere. The streets were totally empty, every business closed, and not a person in sight. Kind of a strange feeling, almost like being in a movie and being the only survivor, but of course it only lasted a few hours then it was back to thousands of cars.

As far as answering those loaded questions, my wife learned real quick not to ask me questions such as "do this make me look fat". I normally pretend I don't hear them and make a fast exit, but if backed into a corner I will tell the truth. Needless to say, I no longer get those type of questions.

You may have lots of waves from Earl. It looks like we are going to get tropical storm only but Earl may hammer the east coast. The next couple of days will determine what happens.

Since I have family in Florida, I try to keep tabs on hurricanes throughout the season (I can't rely on those people to let me know what's going on), so I have found this website:

Track Hurricane Danielle, Track Hurricane Earl / Stormpulse / Hurricanes, severe weather, tracking, mapping

I have it as one of my homepages from June 1 through November 30 (thank Firefox for tabbed browsing). Anyway, it's a great way to track those things.

Thanks for the link, I normally use the Nat. Hurricane Center, but this is showing data from them with better track maps. Looks like Earl will miss us, other than the outer edge with lots of rain. Some of the other islands are getting hit though, so I need to cancel some business trips.
