Lightbulb Question

Can someone explain in lame terms what The Rule of Thirds and The Golden Mean?means??
Im taking a class currently and its talking about 1.681 something or another i donno HELP Please!! thanks

I would take time to read through the dPs website and not just the forums. They have some great articles and tips for beginners.
