"Pretend I'm funny." Only works if you're totally deadpan about it though.

Scream!

They either do it and laugh, or just laugh.

I don't have anything that I want to do or say that gives me the "grinning idiot" type of photo... I know I know... some people love that type of photos... I just can't for the life of me figure out why.

If it's a kid...."booger-brain" or "monkey butt" usually does the trick. I'm full of stupid/funny stories so I usually end up telling one. I think talking and telling stories makes a lot of people feel comfortable. Just don't forget to have the camera up to your face when you get to the funny part. I done that....too many times...

Snicklefritz.

Once the confused look goes away, deep smiles and laughter usually ensue.

I did a photo shoot this week with some England and Wales rugby players, for a rugby clothing manufacturer's catalogue - my issue was the other way around, STOPPING them from smiling!

They were great guys, actually -
Me - "Can you do a serious face?"
"You mean like this?"
Me - "I was thinking serious."
"This any good?"
Me - "Imagine you're facing down the All-Blacks while they do their silly dance."
>blank face<
Me - "Imagine I've just called you a pansy.......... THAT'S the face!"

I tell people "You wag your own tails and perk up your ears, I'll work with the dog."
