The series peaked at 40D
Crashed at 50D
Burned at 60D
What a way to kill a camera heritage line...
Thanks Canon.

This is not an upgrade from a 50D, but from a 550D... it should be called a 600D.
Magnesium alloy body... turned to plastic fantastic.
CF memory card... turned to SD biscuits

The REAL 60D was released a long time ago... it is called a 7D.

Canon EOS 60D DSLR announced and previewed: Digital Photography Review

Weirdly, I like what I'm seeing. I'm more upset about losing the PC sync port and AF microadjust than about the plastic body, SD cards, or lack of joystick. But then, I was always in the minority about loathing the bulk and weight of the XXD metal body. All the important features (for me) of the XXD have been retained: interchangeable focus screen, top LCD, all-cross-type AF points, dual wheel controls, quick access buttons, custom setting (ok, 1 instead of 2, but I was only using one anyway), and higher than 3fps frame rate. And all the cool stuff from the 7D I wanted has been added: the 7D/550D sensor/ISO performance/1080p video, ability to use dRebel IR remotes/cable releases, the LCD overlay in the viewfinder, and (hallelujah!) flash master in the pop-up (which is probably why they removed the PC port, the idiots; no multi-flash, I'm pissed about, though). AND there's a flip-out screen, and it's $200 less than a straight 50D successor would have been.

The logic on this one is clear. If the 7D is the D300s's opposite number, then the 60D is now the D90's opposite number.

The 60D makes no sense to me... it's a slightly different spec, 9 point af, slower Canon 7D with Wifi built in ...oh, and it has a bendy screen....

and, they're the SAME price....

Canon? Umm?

exactly.. the sensor issue is what has set the D90 above the res tofor a long time now..
the 7D's sensor is a logical move.

Seems like so far its been nearly all negative feedback xD

I really agree that the 7D is more worthwhile and this 60D is kind of a weird additional to the 40D...50D series :S

Best I can come up with is a Rebel with a better control dial. I would consider it an upgrade to my XSi but it lacks a couple of features I want. Both only on the 7d. That is micro focus adjust and 100% viewfinder. If they had at least put micro focus adjust I might consider it.

I suppose I'm a minority. I have no use for video. It is almost like the camera companies are trying to kill off still image photography.

I know there are others that have micro adjust, they are not in my upgrade path.

For just a few dollars more I can go through the canon loyalty program and get a 7d. That is a no brainer.

The 50D is 9-pt AF.

7D is a higher tier. The two features I never expected to see in the XXD line were the 7D's AF system and its frame rate--those were its differentiating features, just as the 1D's AF system and frame rate differentiate it from the 1Ds. Aside from that, vs. the 50D which is what this is replacing, you're only losing 1fps.

Given that right now the D90 is nikon's bestselling model? And it's also plastic and lacking AF microadjust? I'm thinking people are still going to be buying this sucker.

I don't quite get how everybody's so scathing about a bendy screen on the 60D when everybody was rapturous about the D5000's bendy screen--which can't be used on a tripod. Personally, I've wanted a bendy screen for ages. I'm getting old, and I'm short and being able to compose with the camera at arm's length when I need to is not a bad thing.

S'WHAT?! The 7D streets (B&H price today) body only for $1539. How the hell is that the same price as $1099? If $500+ is nothing to you, I'd be happy to accept your check. I think someone's confused between the 50D and 7D. THESE ARE TWO DIFFERENT TIERS. And the MSRP on the 60D is $200 lower than the 50D started out with. Within a year, it's going to street for $900--territory the 50D is only just starting to reach after more than two years.

Apparently everybody was expecting to get a $500 discount on a 7D. Kind of hard for Canon to make money if that's what they do.

...errrr, you know my comment wasn't a personal attack on you, right?

Just for your info though... I like bendy screens, I just mentioned it had one?... (I had a Powershot Pro1) and from the press release ... The EOS 60D body only is available from October priced £1099.99 / €1309.99 RRP inc VAT and the 7D, from Camerabox ...same price - though the 60D won't be 1099 when it's available... rrp is never what it goes on shelves for.

If you want a 60D, buy one... ??
