Default Beloved D40 stolen!

Hi, I hope you can understand my grief that my D40 was stolen from me on Monday.

Some thief broke into my garage and sneaked into the kitchen where my camera was, took it and ran off. They didn't take anythinhg else - now we have to convince the police and the insurance company that that is what happened and pay the excess so I can buy a new one - what a palaver!

So my D40 with kit lens, 8Gb Extreme III card and filter are gone - fortunately, only a few pics of the kids and a couple of my wife's cake pics were on the card, so I haven't lost anything irreplaceable, but still, my D40!!!

Anyway, hopefully it will all be sorted and then I am faced with a choice - with C. £500 to spend, should I just replace my D40 like-for-like and pocket the well needed surplus cash, should I upgrade to a D40x? Should I go for a D3000, or even a D5000? Should I maybe go for a D40x and a new 35mm prime lens (equivalent 50mm on a full frame camera, so basically a nifty-fifty for a DX format camera, or so I understand)?

Choices choices, and yet still uncertainty over the police and the insurers!

Appreciate your thoughts and commiserations!

Tom

Damn that sucks, really strange they would go through all that trouble of breaking in and only taking the camera. Were you home at the time? I don't think you will have a problem getting your insurance to cover it. As long as you file a police report ASAP.

I'm sorry for your loss. It gets my back up how some BEEPS thinks its ok to stole off other people. They should find him/her and cut their fingers off to stop them doing it again. I hope you get it sorted soon.

Yes, I was upstairs with my two little boys putting them to bed - the back door was open but it's secure round the back - except for when you jemmy open the garage doors of course.

It must have just been an opportunist poking around - some bloody nerve though.

Yes it is pretty annoying, not sure I buy into the whole Afghani justice thing though!

I agree it must have been an opportunist that took it. My mother in law had her purse stolen while she was watching telly in broad daylight and someone walked into the kitchen and swiped it

Hopefully you'll get a new camera with the insurance but I know what a pain it is for them to cough up.

Report it to Nikon, they will hot list the serial number -- that way if it is ever sent in for service they will return it to you. Next, having had a D40 and loved it, I would highly suggest the D5000. Same form factor with the CMOS sensor and more pixels, plus the articulated display.

Definitely second the S/N to Nikon, but I'd recommend the D3100 at this point. Wait a few weeks for it to become available, then grab one.

What does the new D3100 offer that is better than the D5000 - not familiar with its specs.

The D3100 features do look good, especially the full HD, full auto-focus video and extreme ISO features, but unfortunately we go on holiday 3rd week in Sept, and I could do with my new cam for then...

So it's D5000 + 18-55 Kit and a 35mm F\1.8 AF-S lens (total about £565 on EBay etc.) or a D90 and the 35mm F\1.8 E Lens, plus the 18-55mm AF-S VR lens (total about £620).

Or, I guess I could hire one for hols and get the D3100 when I get back???

All this and still need to get fingers crossed that Insurance pays up - there's no way I can replace it without the insurance paying up for at least 4 months (Dear Santa....)

Will report to Nikon, thanks for the advice on that one.

Tom
