i am wondering what type of insurance you have on your digital cameras. i had a digital slr canon 50d and ended up going swimming with it, not intentionally of course, but needless to say it pretty much got fried. i tripped and fell in the water not once but twice, very embarrassing to say the least. but i learned a hard lesson the hard way. i have since gotten me a new one, same model and all, but this time i am more cautious as ever. what type of insurance do you carry on your insurance, is it separate or can you insure it through your local insurance, auto, homeowners etc.? i just want to be covered if anything ever happens again.

That reminds me of a video I saw a month or so ago where this guy who had a few thousand dollars worth of camera gear on him was walking backwards down the isle at a wedding, shooting the bride and groom when he fell into a water fountain and completely soaked all his gear. Sure hope he had insurance...

called my insurance company and they said that it could be covered under my homeowners insurance but because of the way it got damaged they might not cover it. they are checking on it for me. they can add an extra policy to my homeowners that would cover the camera etc but she was not sure what to classify it under.

My insurance company covers my photography equipment as a rider on my renter's insurance. Relatively cheap; $25 for $2,000 of equipment/year. Loss or damage, and no deductible. They offer a similar rider for computer equipment.
I'd say check with your agent and see what your present company can do for you. |

For cheap things like camera equipment, computers, electronics, etc... I have the best policy of all - it is 100% free each year. It covers me for 100% of the loss. It is called self-Insurance. The odds of anything happening to this stuff is small so why pay a company money to most likely get nothing back. Insurance for these items is like buying exteneded warranties - they are winners for the companies that sell them - otherwise they would not be in the business.
The definition of insurance is the transfer of risk for a fee. This makes sense for huge things like your home or your car or maybe even your life. It does not make economic sense for little things. Most people can survive the loss of a camera, but not a home. The cheapest long-term approach is not to insure these items, what you save in the long-run more than pays for the cost of the item.

yes i agree that the insurance is like having an extended warranty but that warranty may not cover accidental damages and to if you don't have the money put aside that can replace all your equipment do to damage then you have to really save up and get another and in some cases that is easier said than done. that is like putting insurance on your car or your house. either way you are dang if you do and dang if you don't. catch 22. ty all for your comments, checking with my agent to see what insurance i can get and checking with some other companies that were recommended.
