Default Scanning old photos & negatives

Hello,
I'm sure that this has been discussed somewhere on here, but I haven't found it yet.

I'd like to make digital copies of my old negatives and photos. I'm not sure what type of equipment I'm going to need to buy. I'd like to get good quality resolution so that I can make more prints in the future. How much resolution enough? Is there a device that does negs and pic equally well?

If anyone has experience with this I'd love some feedback.
Thanks!

How many negatives do you have to scan?

Nikon coolscan or Canoscan FS-4000US are about the best around. Don't get a flatbed with one of those negative/slide adapters.

Thanks for the input!

@ Murtasma
I have lots of negatives (probably a few hundred of strips) and even more pictures.

I would stay away from the flatbeds like Jim mentioned for the negatives. Most entry level consumer flatbeds should be more the acceptable to scan prints in from. Another thing you will want to consider is cleaning your film. Depending on how it was stored you may have to clean the film up before you scan it. It will save you a ton of time post processing when you find a stay hair or dust on the negative.
