Default Shooting in a graveyard... your thoughts...

I have a girl that wants to do something dark and edgy... she also said that a graveyard will be a nice place to start... I was wondering if it's just me thinking too much, but isn't it a little disrespectful of the dead to do something like that? What are your thoughts? have you guys done anything like that?

I don't think it's disrespectful as long as you don't show any of the names on the markers...

Depends on what you're doing in the cemetary and teh style of pictures.

I personally find a lot of 'edgy' pictures shot in cemetaries distasteful and disrespectful and i have a high tolerance for bad taste!

Whatever you choose to do you need to tred carefully because of peoples sensibilities.

That's why i was trying to steer her away from the idea because I didn't want to disrespect anyone...

I don't find it disrespectful either, tough I think is a sensitive subject, for the people who you might cross while shooting, visitors.

I wanted to make some photos in one of the big cemeteries in Montreal, but they don't allow it. Still, I passed by Maurice Richard's grave (the greatest player in the history of the Montreal Canadiens, for those who don't know him) I spoke with a guard near by and he let take a few quick shots.

took a ton of photos at Pere Lachaise Cimitiere in Paris last year. Still processing them. Took some at the cemetery in Key West as well. I also have some from the French Huegenot cemetery in New Paltz NY.

It wasn't too long ago that this forum did a weekly assignment on cemeteries.

I think the issue will be what it is that she wants to do to make the photos "edgy" that would determine if you've crossed a line and been disrespectful to the family of someone deceased.

Perhaps you could build some headstone props using granite-look paint and create your own private "cemetery" in which to shoot.

I really don't see a problem with it. If given the chance, I would not have a problem with it at all. No matter what you do, there will people that think it would be in bad taste, but if it makes you this nervous, you could contact the cemetery care takers, and see what they say. Especially if it is for a specific shoot with a model, and equipment.

Just imagine for a moment, if you were visiting that cemetery to see great grandad, how would you feel about having someone being "edgy" on his headstone?

I agree with IABoomer, build a headstone, then you can get really creative and place it where ever you want and get as edgy as she needs.

Trust me, the dead don't care. Their families might.
