Default Flickr vs Deviant Art

I'm about to purchase a "pro" account at either Flickr or Deviant Art. But from what I can tell, the free account at Deviant Art (DA) is almost the same as the Pro account at Flickr.

I'm wondering why most people here seem to choose Flickr over DA?

The other question I have is licenses...it appears as though on DA you can either have an image with no license or three forms of Creative Commons, none of which legally prevent downloads. Not that it's a HUGE issue for me, but I would like to have people contact me before they use my pictures. Does anyone know how to upload pictures to DA and have them be "All rights reserved"?

Your advice and opinions are most welcome.

I LOVE deviant art. I absolutely love it. Also, deviant art now offers a Portfolio that is amazing. I just can't seem to get into flickr.

In dA you can choose the cc licenses or you can just leave them off so you don't give any rights to anyone but to look at it. And you can add stuff in the description to say something like "You may NOT use, alter, edit, or manipulate my work in any way. THIS IS NOT STOCK Please respect my copyright!" and add icon like DoNotUsePlz on deviantART in there too. And if they want to steal your image there's pretty much nothing you can do about it. Downloading and using your image are totally different things.

I find myself not adding my photos to dA as much anymore since it's a hassle to define all those categories and so on. In Flickr you can just select the files and you can be done if you don't want to tag them or name or anything. And there's geotagging in Flickr.

Flickr is more photog friendly place and sharing your images on forums is much easier. I've been meaning to get me a pro account in Flickr but haven't gotten 'round to it yet. I had premium account in dA for a year or two but didn't find it very useful and I didn't use dA to the fullest. Flickr just seems more mature place to be since I don't see all them Myspace bathroom mirror selfportraits and badly drawn anime crap all over the place. :D

If you're in to blogging then Flickr is better fit. Wordpress plugins for Flickr are better in every way. Only things I've seen for dA are most recent deviation (1) and then plugin to enable you to use the :thumb123800137: codes straight in your wordpress.

I am a user of both, and have been on dA much longer than on Flickr, but I have to say I've practically abandoned dA since getting onto Flickr.

Flickr seems to be much more community oriented and I'm getting far more views and comments on photographs that have only been there for a few days and added to one group, than I ever got on my photos that have been on dA for years.

Also, I like the ability of Flickr to automatically import EXIF data, I don't know if dA has changed but last time I used it, you had to add keywords, exposure details, location etc manually, and the upload process was very clunky.

I use Lightroom and Flickr works seamlessly with this, enabling me to upload photos direct from there, which saves a lot of time, and finally Flickr integrates with other services I use, such as blogger, facebook and twitter which means whnever I upload photos get four times the publicity from one upload.

I've used dA for 3 years now. Sometime i'm active and sometimes not. Main thing I like this is the way I can browse someone's photos and fav them. I also like deviantWATCH, which is very comfortable way to follow my fav artists and also friends.
And now there's portfolio. Since I have to mine it's kind of comfortable, because I can add photos directly from dA account.

Recently I also tried Flickr, to find out what is so cool about it. Well, I uploaded some photos there, made galleries and sets and I come to like this organizer. I also liked that it imported my keywords. But what I didn't like were the photo browsing. I've never liked it. Just clicking those small arrows there and not knowing where I am in the gallery is uncomfortable.

I like to use dA but I sometimes still go thourgh galleries in Flickr.

I've been using dA for a few years, but I've gotten sick of the infighting and politics of it. It's full of children or people bickering like children. It, like DPReview, is also a terribly snobby place for certain things.

Flickr is much friendlier, if a bit less welcoming at first.

The biggest problem I have with dA is that I went there to get some comments and criticism on my photos when I first started out. While that has happened a bit, for the most part I get blind favourites, and most of those are from pictures I took at an Anime Convention the year before last. Those seem to be the only pictures I have up that are of any interest to anyone.

Oh yeah the snobbery is another thing about dA... it never happened to one of my photos because I didn't even get many views or comments, but on many other artworks I would see these huge debates, usually about whether something was 'art' or not (seems to be the big issue over there) which just descend into bickering.

While it would be wrong of me to stereotype it seemed to always be the anime fanboys that were responsible for the flamewars, because I think many were young and immature and also I think because they followed a very prescriptive style of art so they had gotten use to critique being a simple case of 'does it follow the rules or not'.

When I first joined DA I got alot of great feedback from people and every photo I put up got favourited alot of times. This was a few years ago. These days I would be lucky if my photos get viewed a few times. DA has also become a place where the more butt you kiss the more your butt gets kissed and that, is something I cannot stand..
