Default Canon Lens Compatibility

If this question has been asked, I apologize first for repeating it, but I couldn't find it in a search. Yesterday I bought a Canon Xs with kit lens...my son has a Canon Rebel K2 that came with a Canon EF 28-80 zoom lens. Am I correct in assuming that this lens is compatible with my dslr? And can you tell me something of the quality of this lens? It's shortcomings, if any, it's better applications? Thanks so very much! I want to add, this is my first dslr...I went from a Kodak Easyshare p&s to my new Canon...please be gentle with me, lol!

hopefully you'll be able to find some info here: Canon EF 28-80 zoom lens use with digital Canon Xs - Google Search
Maybe call Canon support in your area to check.

i think all EF lenses will work (correct me if i'm wrong) but all that great FD glass won't. They changed the mount without providing any backwards compatibility.

Isn't that the truth. I have some great FD primo lenses: the 24mm f1.2, 85mm f1.2, 135mm f 2.0 and the 300mm f2.8. When Canon switched to the EOS system. I had to go out and purchase the ones I presently owned now.

Yes, as previously mentioned, any EOS-mount "EF" or "EF-S" lens can be used on your XS.

Um... Canon made 8 different EF 28-80s. Can you give us the full designation (I.e., what's printed on the lens? Because the f/2.8-4.0L USM version is a different beast from the f/3.5-5.6s . The L is probably terrific. The f/3.5-5.6s less so, more on a par with your 18-55 kit lens image-quality wise, with the only real distinguishing thing being whether the lens has USM or not.

Focal length-wise, it's meant to be a wide-to-slight-telephoto lens on film, but on a digital body is more like normal to short telephoto. It's probably best used as a walkaround lens, albeit one that won't go particularly wide. Your 18-55 pretty much duplicates its function on a digital crop-body. (i.e., 18-55 x 1.6x crop factor = 28.8-88mm).

No, the 18-55mm is the same as an 18-55mm and the 28-80mm acts like a 28-80mm

Do we have to do this all over again?

Snort. Yeah, I'm sick of giving that lecture again and again and freaking again. All right. For more clarity: I meant it duplicates the same function on digital that the 28-80 had on film. Wide-to-slightly telephoto.

The lens says EF 28-80mm 1:3.5-5.6 II.

Cool. Here's a review:

Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II Lens Review

Seems to be a low-cost consumer lens. Your 18-55 is probably better.
