Default A DPS Friday Funny?

Of all the places on the Internet to see this. I find it very comical to see this on DPS where it seems like that anytime I enter this site I see a post about the same thing.
I posted a couple of photos in Animal & Wildlife SYS and I get a response stating how they would keep the image on the desktop. You can read my reply in that post, if you want. I guess my humor level is high at the moment as this has been discussed thousands of times on DPS and then it happens here is just plain ironic.
It's really no BFD, but it is funny that it happened here so openly. If you want to see what I'm talking about here is the link, One of our endimic birds

It is a cracking picture lol
But that is a bit cheeky of the poster to assume they can pilfer the image! (Is right click and save not disabled on here?)

If I place a piece of furniture by the side of the road it is legally considered "public domain" and anyone who wants may come by and pick it up without fear of legal reprisal. Placing your images, unprotected, on the Internet amounts to the same thing. You bear the responsibility for their protection, not those who would use them as part of their desktop screensaver. You may either take steps to prevent them being downloaded, or put a huge copyright symbol on them, or post them at very low resolution or simply don't post them at all. Whichever method you choose, you are in control and expecting people not to pick up the images you leave laying hy the side of the Internet is a pipe dream.

Actually, that's not necessarily the case. There have been cases in NYC where objects placed on the curb for garbage pickup have been collected by others and these collectors have been prosecuted by the city. It seems the municipal government sees "items placed for trash pickup" as city propery.

Again, not the case. Placing images on the internet does NOT make them public domain. Not even CLOSE. Unless the creator specifies that it is public domain, the image is their property and, if taken or used without consent, constitutes theft.

It's up to the creator to prosecute thefts, not prevent exposure. Just because I want to show my images doesnt mean I should HAVE to worry about people stealing, in much the same way a restaurant having a patio shouldnt HAVE to worry about the tables and chairs being taken. Theft is theft.

First of all, we were talking about people who download images to use on their personal desktop. Trust me, I someone uses one of my images for commercial purposes they are going to get a bill from me and a note from my attorney.
I will admit that the public domain metaphor was not quite as tight as I had hoped, but the simple truth is that images posted on the Internet may as well be public domain becuase they are so darned easy to copy and paste. Unless you can show me where someone has been successfully sued for a substantial amount of money for downloading an image to a screensaver my point remains: as photographers we must assume people are going to do this unless we take measures to prevent it.
I am a big fan of the site digitalblasphemy. The artist there offers a number of images for free (which I think is smart marketing) and the rest cannot be dowloaded without a paid account. It seems like a clever compromise; he leaves a few out by the road for anyone to 'steal' but the rest require monetary compensation. Not a bad way to do business.
