Just had a D300s delivered and saw the manual. OMG!

It's a camera. Aperture, speed, ISO. All you need to know! Everything else you can discover bit by bit.

congrats... its an awesome camera

what dslr did you have before?
just start at athe beginning, and flip through each page.. dont have to read everything. but make sure you know what each button does and what you can re-program them to do.

7fps with 51Point 3D Tracking is .....awesome..

i went through the same feelings when i got my d300, with a lot of reading and useing the camera as much as possible i am starting to get some photos which i think are good .the basics are the same as any other camera eg apperture shutter speed iso . it took me a while to come to grips with all of this and learn the camera at the same time .what i have been doing is to set myself a project on one type of photo eg action , panning ,low light ,depth of field ,etc then read up as much as i can on that subject and go out and practice that type of shot until i get the results i am looking for .the main thing is dont give up it will happen eventually

If you've had a Nikon dSLR before, there's very little you'll need to learn: it's all essentially the same. There are some new functions you'll have to look into, but other than that, have at it.

It took me a grand total of a half hour to go through and understand everything in the manual/menu that was different when I switched from a D80 to a D300s. It cant be that hard.

Had a D40x before. Was looking for the preset modes (Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close Up, and Night Portrait) on the D300s last night because all you seem to get is P,S,A,M.

Seems that its alot easier (once you know where the buttons are) to alter Iso, WB via button a scrolly wheel rather than via menuing.

yeah.. its a real camera.
only MASP and you customise your picture controls to what you want to shoot. so you can still get vibrance for landscapes etc etc

thats for shooting speeds/control
Ch High speed shooting (7fps)
CL Low speed (you choose your FPS in the menu)
S single frame
Q Quiet mode
Mup Mirror up

yeah... lots to learn.
i have only used ONE of the four custiom Setting banks, and one of the four custom shooting banks

i do love the ability to store several custom WB presets

start slow, take pictures and look through the manual. dont be afraid to change stuff and experiment. It has a reset button if you really think you stuffed it up.
your learning curve wil be much greater than mine.. Like Osmosis also have a D80 which is virtually the same in terms of control of primary functions... with excepton of butons in different places..

all the best with it,

I just find it easier to change things form the one set. Unless i were shooting something VERY different on a regular basis, changing one or two items isnt going to kill me.
