Good article here on taking shots inublic places.
I was harrassed taking shots of a car wreck I witnessed by responding police officers. Its really getting kinda crazy that cops think theres a law againest photography in open spaces. |

About bloody time.
Unfortunately, until this information becomes mainstream, things wont change enough for it to matter. In your case of photography of a car wreck, the officer may have been (wrongly) arguing for privacy for those involved in the accident. If there are injuries, there is an ethical dilemma regarding photographing the people involved. I know I was given the go ahead (and allowed essentially on scene) at a car wreck last winter, but only after the injured had been taken away. Same goes for a fire this spring. While I was legally in the right to snap away, I chose to acquiesce to the officers requests and hold my photos. In those cases, I dont mind being asked to hold my pictures until the ambulances have left.
