Last spring we took the family to Seaworld in Orlando. I uploaded several photos that I took to Flickr and recently was contacted by Schmap (an online travel guide) requesting permission to use one of my photos in the guide. It was published in July's edition of Schmap! (no money in it for me but they do give credit to the photographer).

Here is a link to the photo that was published.

I thought I'd look Schmapp up, wasn't too surprised to find an article like this.

Credit is a useless form of compensation.

No one will see it, look you up and break down your door for more of your work. Sorry.

Loved this line from the article.

Well done anyway, I suppose.

It's a clever way for the business to keep its costs down though.

I'm neither an "aspirant pro" nor looking for any form of compensation. If I was I would never have given permission to use the photo.

I don't think he was saying that about you personally, he was just quoting the article.

it feels good doesn't it. i had one of my photos of the national gallery in london used in schmapps.

i agree that if you're a pro or aim to be a pro, becareful with giving your work away for free, but for us neophytes, it just feels good to get some recongition.

I realize you were just quoting the article. I didn't mean to be defensive.

I know photography is a difficult profession especially with people who go out an buy the latest camera and setup shop by undercutting the price on established pros.

Photography is a hobby for me and I don't ever expect to take it to any other level. I enjoy taking photos and sharing the few that turn out to be relatively good (interesting, properly exposed and composed etc.). I'm afraid if I tried to make it into my job, it would be just that .... a job.

Thanks for the comments. I did find the article interesting.
