Default Cloud backup anyone?

Debating my off-site backup solution (or lack thereof). Basically, I want to back up about 100,000 NEFs.

Doesn't look like Google storage will do the trick. It looks like they've got a 25MB file limit.

Thinking about S3, but it seems pricey for what I want it to do. Their reduced redundancy is $0.10/GB.

I don't particularly want to ration my storage, but I don't want to spend $100/mo for a backup either. I've got like 4TB (and counting) of local storage, but some of that is just system backup, and it's all redundant.

Thoughts? Obviously transferring all of this data is no small feat in and of itself, but I can do it in parts overnight if I have to.

Question is, if you had to pull it all back down how long would it take you? about a month or more ... How about a couple of portable 2TB HD's that you take offsite.

I'm thinking of clouding my archive too... Not sure with whom as yet, but looking into it.

Taking a month to pull it back down is easier, and less costly than my own funeral if I lost it all... (I've got redundant disk backups in multiple locations, but you never know when the earth's gunna open up and swallow the lot!! *eeek* )

Report in if you find anything worthwhile!

well if you put it that context, ..

and has been said 100% secure backup is possible IF you are willing to spend the money..

Off site where? Six hours away in Cleveland. It's a non-starter. Updating the backup?

I wouldn't need to restore all of my files immediately anyway, just the current stuff.

Like I said, I have redundant local copies. Amount of time to recover is pretty irrelevant if we're talking about this kind of catastrophic loss. Odds of multiple simultaneous failures are unlikely, I'm more worried about fire.

RND4000 - ReadyNAS NV+ (Diskless)

Ethernet + USB means I can dump everything locally, take it to mom's house, plug it in, and update through the web. If I have a catastrophic loss (fire, etc), I'll probably head back there anyway, and can restore locally.

Hot-swappable, expandable, SATA, RAID, cheap. Any down sides?

Bah! You can get a pretty decent funeral these days that doesn't cost all that much.

It sounds like you are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. You are not a major corporation that has to backup realtime databases that are constantly changing. You have a library of photos that don't change, you just constantly add to them. Given that, you only need to back up the new stuff once you have the base backed up.

You say you can store stuff at your mother's home, so that is the most cost effective solution. Put the stuff on a couple of portabel 2TB drives and you are partly set. Then you can do daily incremental backups to google or some other place, and when it gets past a certain size you then copy those files from your hard drive to a portable and wipe out the online data and start again. Mountain now reduced back to hill size for you.

i'm a fan of https://www.dropbox.com/pricing, but it's not cost effective for the size you're looking at storing (nor would any cloud server at this time that i'm aware of).

i'm also a fan of h/s sata drives. i store 1tb at my mother-in-laws place (she only lives 5 min away), once a month (or two) i grap it back-up and return it. i'm liking kirbinster's idea of transition from a cloud server once you've reaced a predetermined cap. kicking myself for having not though of this before. now i only have to go to my mother-in-laws once every three months!

I use carbonite, no I am not a spokesman. I signed up for 3 years for about $150 total, and now use time machine as my primary and have my backups in the clouds for just over 4 per month. For me it works, and it has enabled me to go back and retrieve files a couple of times. I have never had a major catastrophe (knocks on side of head) but I feel somewhat safe seeing the little padlock icon in my taskbar. I have about 15k photos and most of my 2 little boys photographic memories stored there.
