Hi Jason,
you're there now so you know more than me. I'm sure you have numerous brochures and a guide. I think you've been to Maruyama park I was there in "the Sakura blossom period"Sadly, I forgot a lot of places I've been to in Hokkaido... And more sadly it's the fact that I didn't know anything about and didn't have any interest in photography while I was there I bought my current camera in Sapporo, and it was kind of camera my friend told mi to buy because I didn't know anything....foolish... so I have thousand of photos from Japan an just a few of them I can call nice one.... On my flickr there are just seven photos from Kyoto, Tokyo, Sapporo.. Here is the one from Sapporo..there's an explanation where I took it. ![]() Hope you'll having a good time! |

Drink the beer! Love Sapporo.
Try to get photos of the Ainu people. They are the indigenous people of Hokkaido (and historically also Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. They are hard to find as they try to not be thought of as Ainu, but some of the 'outside' cities/towns have them. Keep your eyes open! Just look for a lighter skinned, more hairy japanese person! ![]() The town of Nibutani in Hidaka area (Hokkaido prefecture) has a number of Ainu households and a visit to some of the Ainu owned craft shops close to the Ainu museums (there are two of them in Nibutani) is an opportunity to interact with the Ainu people. Many "authentic Ainu villages" advertised in Hokkaido such as Akan and Shiraoi are tourist attractions and provide an opportunity to see and meet Ainu people. Man, I so miss Japan

Hahahahaha, they have plenty of Sapporo beer gardens. Go to the factory, drink beer and eat their Mongolian barbecue. I've lived in Japan on and off for eight years. Sapporo is noted for their WINTER sports, especially the world famous ice and snow carving festival. I believe they might have horse racing in the summer. There an Ainu village, you and go to and photograph. Check out my photo shelter gallery, in my Japanese galleries, it'll give you an idea of what to shoot in the norther island. Seattle, WA., based freelance photojournalists specializing in sports, travel | Jim Bryant Photography. Mostly you'll find is a bunch of traditional festivals, which are really cool to attend and take pictures of.
