Default If you doubt HDR editting...

There are things that need to be seen to be believed. Next time you have a photo that appears hopeless, or just needs a lift, try layering darker/lighter copies of original.

DoubtHDR

Anyone gifted in providing links, please tag on here. I would enjoy more reading on the method as well.

The filthy window the moon shines through is double-pane, providing the lower second image.

Ask and you shall receive (Hopefully you were asking for links on HDR or what's below is a totally random set of info on HDR )

Nice work. I'm looking forward to tomorrow evening's lunar eclipse although my record of moon photography is not too great (an 18-55mm lens doesn't really quite cut it!)

wulf,

I was thinking of one of sagelike's moon photos he was unhappy with, that might have have been converted like this one.

Also, I still only have the Fuji with its 6-36 mm generic zoom, so my standards are low for these things. Are you hoping for individual-crater kind of detail?

This is as close as I've got:

As close as I could get...

I'm waiting for a night when the moon seems to hang lower, since I can't stand up much taller! I've seen better but I think your shot has come out pretty well and is a good illustration of how some HDR ideas can help.

wulf,

Or Gunsotsu's over at Techniques/Shooting the moon. I don't understand the lens issue: it would seem your 55mm would capture more than that. I do zoom to get the 36mm, but if anything I would expect to have much less than what came out of editting. But I am on a hill in Central New York . . .

Clouds cooperating, I will be out tonight. Good weather to you!

(Second thoughts: someone suggested the moon is much brighter than we imagine, and I've followed her suggestion, the above shot at 1/1500 f/8 -2.1 EV, which is about all the options I have)

AND Post #56 at Assignments - Circles. Dang.

I normally use the medium picture size setting (2256x1496) - the larger the image, the more hassle it is dealing with it on the hardware I have available. However, I must remember to switch up to large tonight (3000+ wide)... that will then let me do more "digital zoom" back on the computer.
