Lightbulb I am asking a question

I am asking you a question:

Do you just point, pose, shoot, go back to the camera and see what it looks like, OR you will take pictures and see the pictures later on to gather in computer so you can pick one is the best stunning picture ever you had OR the picture came surprise of stunning picture ever you do had?

I am talking about self portrait question. Sorry about that to forgot to add.

Hope you are will enjoy your long weekend.

I have no idea what, "the picture came surprise of stunning picture ever you do had?" means but I can tell you how I work. I will typically starts out by getting my lighting correct. To do this, I shoot and chimp the histogram and light positioning, looking at each shot, until I like the results. Then I shoot away without looking at each one. I upload them to my computer and sort out the best ones and do my post processing. Of those, I will upload my absolute favorites for the client to see.

If you start snapping off pictures with no purpose or planning, then you are just taking snapshots. If you want to create something artistic, you should have an idea in mind that you want to convey to the viewer. Given the light you have to work with, what aperture will give you the correct depth of field to achieve the desired effect? Do you want a fast shutter speed to stop any movement, or do you want a slower one to blur the motion? How can I best compose the picture to express my idea to the viewer? Should I zoom in or out to make my point? Should I get down on the ground or move closer to my subject to emphasize my point?

Basically, you need to control all aspects of your picture to reach a desired effect or message. If you just start taking pictures of everything, hoping to get lucky, your odds are slim.

Hope that helps,
Greg

When I first started shooting I was always surprised by the results; sometimes pleasantly surprised, sometimes disappointed. Over the years and with loads of practice, I have a pretty good idea what my results are going to look like. That doesn't mean I am never surprised; every once in a while something turns out much better than expected. Would I like to see the image on a big screen each time I pressed the shutter? Absolutely, but that's not very practical. The little screen on the back of my camera is OK for a quick peak but not much else. Do I chimp the histogram? Yes, not always but very often I want to make sure my exposure is doing what I expect.
This is the process by which all of us learn photography: snap photo, put it on a big screen, critique, make adjustments, repeat. Yes, there are books to be read and people to talk to but when you come right down to it the best teacher is Shoot/Critique/Adjust.

The amount of lulz this produced probably wasn't appropriate.

my dad was a professional photographer and during the film days he spent plenty of time taking polaroid shots on his large camera (4x5 linhof, he also use 120 backs, in addition t his hasselblad) to make sure the composition, lighting etc. are correct....several pro I know even use a loupe magnifier to check their shots ( I am so cheapo I just use the zoom in function)...so one must look at the test shots, not every shots.

As far as self portraits go, I have never been too impressed with mine. There have been some surprises though. But it has to do with how much weight I have gained!
I do some set up shots first to check my exposure, and the next 200 or so are me trying to pose. I am no model by any means.

LOL Luke...I know what you mean about "those" surprises! I actually try to look at each one and decide what needs to be changed to make it work (if it can work). I don't do many self portraits because I don't like being the person photographed; I like being the person behind the camera!
