Does anyone know any resources where I can learn on these things?
I am a guy. But it would help a lot to know my little piece about each of these things. For the start it would help me to tell people how they should prepare themselves for the shoot... or maybe even help with buying gifts for my girlfriend ![]() And in the future, I would like to learn how to apply makeup etc myself for models. I think it would be a great skill. I am looking for GOOD books, magazines, webpages, anything that will put me in the right direction. Or even if someone here knows lots about this, would love to chat? Thanks, mitch.

Best way (without doing some kind of college course) is probably to get yourself a bunch of big glossy magazines like Vogue and Cosmopolitan. Watch your girlfriend really closely and carefully next time she's doing her make-up too. It may sound a bit weird, but try a bit yourself (not for going out, of course!) - get her to show you how to put on eye-liner and mascara, once you know how to do it yourself, it'll be easier for you to discuss it with models.
Also, do a search on Youtube for girls showing how to do Anime-style make-up. Not necessarily for the specifics of that make-up style, but for the general application techniques. The main thing I've learned from it is that liquid eye-liner totally rocks... Russ...

Worries me a little...
haha. I will talk to her about that and see what she can do for me. I asked her a bit yesterday.. I told her I would buy her books on this kind of stuff if she is interested. and that I would be able to get use out of them too by reading to learn about styles, application methods... etc? I just am not sure where to start with books. I did a quick search on amazon but nothing great really came up.

One other thing to bear in mind with make-up is that just because somebody is the difference between general make-up artistry, and make-up artistry for portrait/fashion photography. Quite often, make-up products and techniques that are used to give women a "healthy glow" rely on reflection to do that, which is great for going to a party or a prom, but when it's viewed under studio lightling that reflection just makes a woman look, well, sweaty.
A make-up artist with experience of doing make-up for photography will know how and when to use reflection to make a subject look good without giving you a headache in terms of having to rearrange your lighting set-up. There's probably as much of an art to being a photographic make-up artist as there is to being a photographer. Hey, I'm starting to think that I appear to know far too much about make-up. I'd better go and build a motorbike, or play some rugby, or something... Russ.

Generally I ask my models if they can do their own hair makeup and theyre usually pretty open to any idea. I also try drawing on printed photos to give them a better idea of what im looking for. I have, however, done work for a makeup artist and there really is no comparison.

Woah - posting twin!
![]() Os is right - working with a make-up artist who has photographic experience and understanding really does make a whole world of difference. I also have a friendly hairstylist who I just adore working with - she's fabulous. I just used "adore" and "fabulous" in the same sentence. I'm going to go and have a lie down....

Do you have any friends in the beauty industry? I have a gal that I work with on occasion that will do hair and makeup for a client. She charges less than what she normally does for these shoots and/or will trade me for her own photo shoot session

Thanks for the awesome tips guys.
I do know some knowledgeable people. I would like to be able to give advice and stuff to models on my own too though! Especially the inexperienced ones, so I can help teach & learn too. I purchased two books that I was told were awesome for learning about things... Making Faces and Face Forward by Kevyn Aucoin
