Default Legit Contest?

Hey guys! I was wondering if this contest (wileyphotochallenge 5) was a legit contest? Like its not a scam or anything?

Thanks,
Lindsie

Oh! and also it would be helpful if someone could maybe explain the rules of the contest to me in a way a 15 year old would understand. hehe. I read it but I don't get it. haha thanks!

It's a legitimate contest but, as I feared, it's a rights grab. Bu submitting a photo they get all the rights to it.

They still retain the right to use the image however they see fit AND attribute your name to it, whether good or bad. That's a red flag.

So if I submit my photo and I won, I don't have any rights to that photo anymore? hmm.. ok. Then maybe what I will do is go re create whats in the photo for a second time and submit that one. So instead of submiting the one I wanted to submit, I would submit the "fake" one. So that I don't loose rights to my good one hehe.

Think that would work?

Thanks,
Lindsie

You retain rights to your image to use however you'd like, they just get the right to use it for whatever they'd like. Win or lose, they'd get the right to use your photo however they want. Without compensating you any further than the contest winnings.

Pretty much if you win, they pay you $500 or other prizes for usage rights of your image.
If you lose, they pay you $0 dollars for usage rights of your image.

15 year old logic. I am practicing for when my kids get older.

The question is - do you want to give free rights to your image in exchange for possibly winning a prize. Remember even if you don't win they still get the image for free.

It is a really sneaky way of building an image data-base basically for free. For $500 they get 1000's images to use in their books, rather than pay for each pic individually.

Actually the more I read the terms the more I find them designed to hide the motive for the competition in the fine print. Dishonest if you ask me... don't like it.

I may be misreading what I quoted above, but I'm seeing that they will only use the images for marketing and advertising on their sites, and in their books. I don't see anything that says that they are going to resell the photos. Again, I may be wrong. I didn't get much sleep last night...

they have could have a huge web and publishing business that require general photos. Normally they would pay for these photos.
Now they can side step paying photographers and instead get folks to send them thousands of subject specific images (pets this month) and they offer up $500.

Make more sense now?
