Default I dropped my new lens!

I hope I am not alone in this!

I was shooting a couple today when my lens dismounted. I have never had this happen before, and I honestly do not know how it came loose.

Anyways, I dropped my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L.

I was just wondering if anybody has had a similar issue with the L lenses being dropped.

It seems to be working just fine right now. It is focusing well and all that jazz. However, it is louder than before. I didn't even hear it focus before, and now I do.

But I may just be imagining things because I am very paranoid.

I don't know if I should send it in or not, or if the warranty will cover it. I'm stuck in the middle of the Pacific, and the closest service facility is in California.

Anyways, HELP!

I am freaking out just a little

Oh man! I don't know what to do, I haven't had that happen yet.. but if its under warranty still I would send it in now so that you know nothing will come up later!

If it's under warranty, send that badboy in! I'm not a Canon shooter but, that doesn't mean anything - send it in...

A warranty generally won't cover accidental damage, so if they find out it fell because it wasn't mounted correctly (as opposed to a fault with the lens itself that caused it to drop), they may not fix it under warranty. So if you do send it don't say you dropped it like in in the post title here

I'd bring it in to a local camera servicing place and just see if they'll have a quick look at it before sending it off.

I think that's what I will try and do. There really doesn't seem to be an issue. The only difference is that I can hear the lens focusing now, but I couldn't before.

I am so glad I had the lens hood on!!! It took most of the damage. I was able to just hammer out the ding and put it back on the lens.

Now, to find a camera repair place in Hawaii....

I will be searching around. I hope that it isn't a lens mount issue and that I am just an idiot that accidentally hit the release button.

I mean, there's no point sending something 2000 miles away only to be told there's nothing they can do or it's fine.

That's a recipe for weeks and weeks of hassle right there.

USM ring motors don't make much of an audible sound when focusing, it is practically silent. The new sound you are hearing might be from another source. One bad effect of constantly using this lens in such a state is that it might wear out the missaligned parts and further the damage.
Perhaps it would be wise to send it the soonest to have a service.
Cheers

I have no idea what adivce to give you. I can only feel your pain. I dropped my not-so expensive Tamron 90mm when I took it out of the box brand new. There was a rattle-sound in it when I shaked it. There was no apparent loss in IQ or functionality. But only the thought that something may have changed inside it was bad enough.

Hope everything turns out well for you.
