Default Good equipment

This is not my joke but it is a reminder to both photographers and the people that make these types of comments:

An amateur photographer was invited to dinner with friends and took along a few pictures to show the hostess.

She looked at the photos and commented "These are very good! You must have a good camera."

He didn't reply, but, as he was leaving to go home he said, "That was a really delicious meal! You must have some very good pots."

I hate it when people assume it's all the camera's doing. Good one!

Why do you expect from the digital age. Most people, who couldn't take a decent picture to save their lives when shooting film and because of the technical advances in digital cameras and photo shop can now get something pretty good.

I would agree with this. True, you need some real skill to be really good, but the equipment of the digital age is a pretty good crutch to the rank amateur. There'd certainly be a lot less people calling themselves photographers, I'd wager anyway.

I used to feel a bit like this, you know, feel insulted because they're complementing the camera. But now I've realised, while it's a damn funny joke, there's really very little reason for me to feel offended by it. I think at some level people just don't know what to complement. With athletes it's their physical skill, with cooks perhaps it's their sense of taste but at the very least you complement that it tasted good (do cooks get offended when someone asks what's in the food? After all, good ingredients do contribute to good food.) But when it comes down to it, just because someone puts eggs, cinnamon, flour, sugar, vanilla, etc into a bowl doesn't mean they'll come out with excellent cookies. Just like just because someone has a nice camera doesn't mean they'll come away with great photos. But all in all, my thought is just that it's much easier to complement something tangible rather than a person's skill.

The fact of the matter is, whatever item they choose to complement, it simply means that they like what you did, whether or not they know that it's more skill than equipment (end rant )

I don't know what you are saying. Partly, it's the bad grammar. But even after repairing the sentence in my head, I still don't get it.

With advances in digital technology, people can now easily take properly exposed pictures.
(that's the essence of what you said right?)

okay... now what? so? People can now take properly exposed pictures easily... and? What's your point?

Edit: Nicole - That's a good way of looking at it actually, people not knowing what to compliment, so they compliment the camera.

What he meant was that the cost per image has dropped through the floor and post editing has become ALOT easier than it was in the film days. I disagree with what he is saying, a badly composed photo is just a snapshot, there is no amount of PP that can turn a pigs ear into a purse.

Modern digital photography has lowered the barrier to creating great photos but that does not mean people with no skills can do it. There is no way in hell I could afford to do photography if it was still film but without decent skills there is no way in hell I can create a decent photograph.

Digital cameras and Photoshop (or GIMP or ....) have lowered the cost not increased the skill of photographers (apart from allowing us to practice for zero cost)

(that's the essence of what you said right?) --- Basically!

okay... now what? so? People can now take properly exposed pictures easily... and? What's your point?--- It means that some who couldn't take pictures before with film cameras can now get a somewhat decent shot.

Sorry, about the bad grammar. I was in a rush to get out the door to go shoot an assignment.

Here's my little story on automatic cameras, even through the story was about a film camera, I still have to relate it to dSLR. photography today. dSLR cameras have made photography so easy that it's within reach of almost anyone who can see and isn't blind. It's so easy, in fact, that a Nation Geographic magazine once ran a cover shot that had been taken by a gorilla with an automatic Olympus 35mm film camera set on Auto (October 1978). Now in this new digital age with dslr and point & shoots we all know photographers who are related to this gorilla.

Edit: Nicole - That's a good way of looking at it actually, people not knowing what to compliment, so they compliment the camera.
It's true, it's true!
