I've come to the realization that photography, as a hobby, is a lot like golf. The equipment can get very expensive, and it takes a lot of practice to get decent it. The biggest similarity, for me at least, is that you shoot and shoot all day, getting frustrated by all the bad shots you make, swearing to give it all up, and then you get that one awesome shot that makes you want to keep on going.

Anyone else have a similar comparison?

Well there is no penalty stroke for taking a second shot. You can always move to improve your lie without a penalty as well. I never pull the memory card out of my camera and throw it in the water hazard or hit it into the woods when I get mad at my pictures. There is not limit to the number of lenses you are allowed to carry in your bag. But you can go out to the "shooting range" and practice your camera techniques.

off topic, but last saturday at the wedding reception i was working, a guest was hit by a rogue golf ball while having drinks on the patio. i worked a shot of him into the slideshow. thats about as close to golf + photography as i'm ever likely to get. horrid game.

Film photography could be compared to firearm ownership.

- somewhat significant cost in initial hardware purchase
- lots of arguments about what "ammo" to use for a situation (film/bullets)
- non-zero cost to practicing your craft
- significant brand-loyalty
- often most of the shots taken don't amount to anything you'd show off

As I had in my sig awhile back.....

Just when you think you have pulled of the perfect shot, your brain starts to analyze it, and your brain then begins to believe you could have done better....
