Default Afternoon Earthquake

Don't know if anyone else felt it, but there was a decent-sized earthquake this afternoon, 1:41 EST. It was felt everywhere from Montreal to New York, Boston, Detroit, etc.

Epicentre? My backyard. Well, not literally, but very nearby. Just across the river from where I live, less than 50km (30 miles). Shook the house rather nicely, and gave us all a pretty good wake up call.

5.5 on the Richter scale isnt huge, but it's not small either. We're accustomed to getting small earthquakes every now and again (the main street in the suburbs I live in lies directly on a fault line), but they're usually very short (1-5 seconds) and fairly weak (less than 3.0, for sure). This was quite different.

Living Colorado, we rarely get them and when we do we never notice. 5.5 would send us all into freak out mode

Oh, definitely. Looking in this morning's paper, there was some damage near the epicentre, but nothing much beyond that.
