Default New thread [SYS Suggestion]

Hey Admin...think we could start a new category called "Kid Portraits" so rightfully proud parents, aunts, uncles and other relatives could post their pictures there????? I mean, I like kids as much as the next person, but snap shots of kids are not what I would normally call "portraits".

Damn New Englander's! Always complainin bout sumthin!

I think a child forum of the portrait area for kids would be good. They are classic portraits thou, and some of the toughest ones to do. I just happen to like the idea of them having their own place.

ahah after I read this post I suddenly realized that there is A LOT of threads right now that have pictures of children. Might be a good thing to have a separate section for? Obviously a very popular photo subject.

What about a separate wedding thread? or even wedding/event. Some of us are getting into that area of photography and I think a separate area would make things easier to find and submit. Weddings are a whole different ball game than portraits, at least I think so.

In the last few months we (the mod/admin team) have considered whether or not to add a section for children, however, at the time we decided against it. I don't know if the opinion has changed since then, however, that was the latest result. I'm sure Sime or Linda will let everyone know if it's changed since then

The danger is that what's to stop the number of sub-forums requested? Children, weddings, men, women, models, candids, teens, adults, dark, vintage, etc. It might be going a bit overboard, but hopefully you can see where we're coming from.

There are a few options though to help you find what you're looking for. First, use tags on your threads (I'm not sure if you can add tags to other people's threads, but if you can, tag them with the appropriate subject too). That way, people know ahead of time what the main subject is. Second, you could also use the social groups to share photos of kids. Social groups are found under the Community link at the top of every page.

I have to say that although Portraiture is one of my main areas of interest, I rarely look through the SYS Portraits forum, simply because on the few occasions that I have, almost all the threads I've seen have been peoples' snaps of their children.

I've got nothing at all against people taking pictures of their children, and posting them for others to see and comment on, and I still get plenty out of the rest of this website for it not to spoil my enjoyment, but still...

I guess this opens up a whole discussion on where the lines are between different kinds of photography. If I point the camera out of my bedroom window and click the button, is that a landscape, or a snap of the view from my window? If I point my camera randomly at one of my friends kids trying to eat a toy car, is it a snap, or a portrait? Actually, on reflection, let's not go there...

Russ.

Although my suggestion was serious, the last thing I wanted to do was open a can of worms! I LOVE this site and hope I haven't thrown a monkey wrench in things. Happy shooting all!

i think its good as it is IMHO.. a picture of a kid is still a portrait no matter how poorly or snap-shotty it is. At the end of the day its still a portrait.

But...but...then the portrait section would then be so empty! *distraught face*
