Hello!
I was going to just post in the 'indroduce yourself' thread, but I wanted to ask a specific question too. My name is Tanya. I've always been interested in photography but could never afford a good camera, until recently. I took a plunge (for me) and got the Canon Powershot G11. I didn't go the next step and get a DSLR because this is my first nice camera and I thought I would be intimidated by an SLR not to mention wanting to buy additional lenses and such that I cannot afford. Anywho! So I stumbled upon this website and it looks like a very nice community of sharing and advice-giving, and the contests look fun! But being a P&S-only user, would I fit in here? hehe I'm really enjoying my new camera these last few months, learning about making interesting-looking pictures and composition. I'm learning it all by my own research and trial-and-error. But if I share my pictures here, I wonder if I would be laughed out of the door hehe. |

Hi Tanya,
I'm pretty new here too and also new to photography. I think you're in exactly the right place here, the members all seem to be very friendly and full of helpful advise whether you're using a P&S or DSLR. Also I've not seen anyone make derisory comments about anyone's shots, merely constructive criticism to help that person learn and improve. Plus there's all the tips and tutorials to go through that are definitely helpful for beginners and the more advanced. Welcome, enjoy the site and I look forward to seeing some of your shots when you post them.

All cameras are welcome here... even film *gasp*
![]() I have to admit, I've looked at the Canon G-series as a pocket P&S for when I don't want to carry my SLR around but want a camera with good controls (and a pretty awesome design).

Welcome!! G11 not anything to be ashamed of. The only place it falls short for pictorial photography is interchangeable lenses. The can be a blessing as you will not spend time trying to figure out which lens to use you will learn to use what you have. Join in an learn with the rest of us. I started shooting professionally 55 years ago with one single focal length lens and still learn each time I go out.

Welcome.Your camera has every thing you need to learn more about photography, and you will find lots of pictures posted here taken with a P&S. I carry one nearly all the time in my car, so,when I don't have my SLR for whatever reason there is a camera around if I find something interesting. Just enjoy the site and take lots of pictures...do not be afraid to post some.
