I have the Manfrotto 222 ballhead/joystick. I find it very easy to level the camera and adjust when the tripod or ground are not.

I chose pan and tilt head but it really depends on the situation. The ball head is great for fast setup of the camera but I find that a nice pan and tilt head is much better for the small adjustments. So if I were in a hurry situation where I dont want to spend 30 secs to setup the camera then I would go with the ball head but since I shoot a lot of landscape shots I take the time to setup the camera and using a pan/tilt with adjustment dials is much better for me to get the perfectly level horizons

I have just realised I have both. Because my normal tripod has a tilt head but my mini one has a ball head.

I prefer the tilt head myself. Easier for me.

I prefer the ball head. I have a pan/tilt head but have played around with a friends ball head tripod. I think they are much easier to use since you don't have to deal with different knobs to adjust a shot, but make sure you hold your camera when you loosen the knob on a ball head.

I chose the pan/tilt head... since I have never tried the ball head.
I am a beginner... so for me... I like the straight forward pan/tilt.
I would like to try the ball style though... to be able to see which was truly my preference.

Smile Tripod heads etc

For me the heads suit slightly different purposes.

My most used tripod is an six inch tripod with a ball head and bendable legs. I point the legs back to me and lock them into my shoulder area. My combined arms and the tripod legs provide a stable camera shot for any camera with a optical viewfinder. This is a compact, lightweight, portable and cheap solution that easily slips into my camera bag.

I use my large tripod with a pan/tilt head when I have the time to set it up and/or do not need to relocate the tripod base frequently.

I use the ball head on my monopod when I want stability, (using my legs and the monopod to form a triangle), but may have to relocate position quickly. It also suits bush walking as it easily slips down the side of my backpack.
