Hi friends,
I'm going to New York on August 26 and staying at the Westin, Times Square; man I'm so excited ![]() Here's where I need your help... I'm a Brit and I've not been to New York before, I know there's loads to do, but I'd like some advice on what to photograph. What are the "must not miss" locations? Post your pics here and inspire me, I can't tell you how excited I am. Cheers,

I got some good ones of Grand Central, Times Square and the New York Stock Exchange. (HDRs of these 3 are very popular at the moment!).
For Times Squre try to get there a bit after sunset so there's still a bit of colour in the sky but you can also see the lights.

Right where to begin went exact same week last year and had a FANTASTIC time!
![]() Get yourself a bus tour ticket one that includes the ticket for the ferry round the island - dont do the full trip it's dull..go round to Statue of Liberty and back - about 90 mins. They are hop on and off buses. Buses take you Uptown, Downtown, and a night tour too which takes you over to Brooklyn. Get on the first bus of the night if you want the best views of the city. You'll only have 10mins photo time there though so dont bother trying to set up your tripod etc you will not have time! Natural History Museum, Grand Central Station, Times square (bit dull mind after the first couple of times lol), in Times Square is a ticket booth for cut price show tickets go see a broadway show. You'll have to queue for about 2 hours there from 3pm but well worth it. Gemma Beale's Photos - Noo Yawk | Facebook Those are my pics - will make my album public in a sec. Central Park is worth a walk through and easy to get to all the museums through there. We did a day in New Jersey too to see family so didn't spend all our time in the city. With the museums etc they are free entry so don't be fooled by the prices you don't have to pay unless you want to. Been told eating in Little Italy is good but tbh we didn't feel safe enough in the surrounding China Town to do that - went with my mum - but if you do, go for it. Totally fallen in love with the city tbh and really want to go back. Very jealous!!

By all accounts you get a better view of the city at the top of the 'Rock' than you do up the Empire State so go there.
I hate heights so did neither lol BTW should warn you i'd only had my DSLR a week when i took those lol and thats not even half the pictures i took...just been through the album and cringed at the dire quality of some when i know i have better lol Anyhoos Enjoy your trip!

I grew up there, so know quite a bit. My favorite is to take the Circleline boat it leaves near the Aircraft carrier on the Hudson river (the darn name is not coming to me right now). Anyway, the boat goes around the entire Island and you get great views and a good narration about the city.

I've lived in NY my whole life, first in Brooklyn and now in the city. So if you've only got a day here's what I would do. These are a must to visit.
1. Brooklyn Bridge - one of the most beautiful bridges in the world, a true classic. 2. Grand Central Station - go when it's busy to get a feel of this working city. 3. Times Square - I would go at night and do some long exposure shots, not the same impact during the day. 4. Chrysler Building - I think the most beautiful building here, so much detail if you can get a close view of the top. 5. St. Patrick's Cathedral - try to go early 6. Time Warner Center - instant classic 7. Rockefeller Center - gets pretty crowded all the time 8. Wall Street/NYSE - the industry that makes NY, NY 9. Flatiron Building - very unique 10. Empire State Building - great views from the top Pretty good if you can do this in one day. As for Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island , don't bother - a waste of time unless you want to take pictures of NY from across the river. |

Lots of good suggestions so far. How about St. Patrick's Cathedral for some great architecture? And don't forget general street scenes in New York. There's always something going on that you can shoot. Street vendors, street musicians, etc. Hope you have a great trip here.
