Default Do you use online back up?

Does anyone use any of these companies for backing up, like Mozy.com? I was wondering if they are any good.

I always back up to external hard drive + DVD. But i am currently trying to decide between SmugMug and Photoshelter for some extras when i start getting prints i would be happy to sell.

I've used carbonite for a couple years. The service is good but it may take some time to upload your files. At least you know that you have a backup online if you need it. I have more than just photos that I worry about.
I have files on my internal drives that are backed up to an external drive each day at 5pm using Syncback and once a week I copy a complete image of my computer onto an external drive using Acronis True Image along with everything being automatically backed up to Carbonite (once saved and closed).

Hi,

I have just posted to a Flickr-Photobucket discussion on photo sharing and thought that I would post here as well.

I am using BlueMelon.com to store and share my photos - they give you a free 1GB of storage and store the photos on amazon S3 ( can one wish for a better free backup? ) and they do not reduce the quality of your photos.

I do not know how much you would use the sharing features, but the storage is free and great, so you may want to check it out ; there is no obligation to share, so you are free to store

I use Carbonite, too. It runs in the background and I've been quite happy with it.

I've always want to try one of these services out but I don't really have the pipe required to upload a terabyte worth of images and other stuff I want backed up. I think in the long run, going with some physical storage medium be it hard disks or tapes is more cost effective. I don't bother with CD's or DVDs they just don't last long enough for me to consider them archival. I would really love to have a good tape back up of my files but for now an external Raid 1 enclosure with two 1.5 terabyte drives stored in a fireproof data safe I think is sufficient for now.

In the future I may get another enclosure and mirror these two against each other, pull the drives out of one of the enclosures and store them in a safety deposit box at the bank and the other in my fireproof safe.

I also don't like the idea that some random person or company out there has access to all my personal information stored in a convenient location.

I back mine up on Flickr, on a cd, on an external backup and my good ones are on Smug Mug.
You might think i'm crazy but I have had a pc crash and lost 1700 images. That sucked

I'm curious. Folks never seem to mention getting a web host and store your photos there. For like $50 a year you can get unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth, a site name of your choosing, etc. All for less money than say the less expensive Mosy version.

I'm not putting any of the other ideas or sites down, just curious why the idea isn't more common.

I back up to an external hard drive and use Mozy. For the money, I think Mozy is quite good. My initial backup was photos only and about 250gb. With a cable modem connection it took about 6 days of constant uploading, but it was quite painless. The program runs in the background and only works if the computer is idle. Now everything is automatic, and it's great peace of mind. I paid for 3 years up front which gets you a substantial discount.

I used to try and keep up with DVD backups as well, but I just can't stay current.
