Default Travelling Photography Help??

Sorry, I wasn't sure where to put this one.

Last year I was away travelling for 3 months. All I took was my trusty canon point and shoot and a 4GB card. I took a LOT of photos, but still had room on the card.
When I got back I had a few issues reading those images from the card and thought I had lost everything for a few days. But I resolved the issue and got all the photos uploaded in the end.

I'm going away again at the end of this year for 6 weeks. Now I've taken to recording more video as well as photos, so I'm going to burn through that 4GB quite easily I assume.

I'm wondering what the best method for saving/backing up your travel photos would be?

Do you take a bunch of memory cards?
Bring an external HD and back everything onto it?

I don't know much about this, but I don't want to risk losing my images, or running out of space.

Cheers!

This might be worth your while, Eye-Fi memory cards: wireless photo & video uploads straight from your camera to your computer & the web., you can upload files wirelessly.

Last two long vacations we (my wife & I) have taken enough memory cards (80GB) to last the trip. They are not erased during the vacation, only after we get back home and the pics have been uploaded to a PC. Works everywhere and you don't need to carry a computer.
We also carry a pair of Wolverine/Vosonic drives, along with the battery chargers, to which the days shoot is duplicated. She carries one & I carry the other.

VOSONIC

Other manufacturers make similar products (not necessarily with a screen to view pics.)

We have never needed the backups.

I use LaCie hard drives as a back up. I got it from Digital Yes Lacie 500GB Starck Mobile Hard Drive (301892), 301892. It's got 500GB of space and it's compact, strong and reliable.
