Default HARD lesson to learn

Because I work full time as a photographer for a newspaper...I have my equipment on me all the time. Well...I left it in my truck for 20 minutes to run into a store and while I was in there it was all stolen from my truck. They pried open the split window in the back. I have never felt so horrible, devastated, lost, mad and violated. I lost both Canon cameras, three lenses and my speedlite. Not to mention all my chargers, extra batteries and compact flash cards. Thank goodness I had only one image on the camera.

The moral here is not only to take your equipment with you, but to insure it. I had all mine insured and my insurance agent is cutting me a check today at full replacement value. That is the only thing getting me through the day.

So all my fellow photogs.....protect your stuff!!!!

Thank you very much for the heads up. Yes, sometimes, it's easy to take these things for granted. Thank you for sharing your story and sorry to hear of your loss... but because you are super smart, you will get everything replaced.

Thanks guys! Hope to have all new equipment this weekend. Hubby even gave me the OK on a few additional pieces! Guess he felt sorry for me after listening to me cry all night...!

lemonaide out of lemons - you can now rebuy the items that really worked for you and choose different solutions for those pieces of equipment that needed upgrading.
I know that is no consolation, as having stuff ripped off is a very personal violation but I hope the new gear helps you to fugetaboutit.

While the experience for you was... well, choose your favorite expletive here, I must thank you for taking the time to remind us what we should be doing.

I'll try and add something: If you have your gear with you make sure it's not visible from outside the vehicle. While that might be hard to do with a pick up, covering it with a blanket or something makes it at least a less inviting.

My gear is in the trunk of my car. I will not open the trunk prior to leaving the car and gear anywhere lest someone catch a glimpse and get any ideas. If I need something out of the trunk I'll stop somewhere else then proceed to my stop.

I was EXACTLY thinking this. I feel really bad about your misfortune, but it should be very easy to turn it into the golden opportunity to upgrade, replace lenses near warranty anyway, upgrade, trim your kit, etc etc. I'd hate to have my stuff stolen, but the idea of being handed a wad of cash to start over sure has it's appeal!

This is so true...it was behind my seat, not covered up...my windows are tinted...but I'm sure they saw a bag and figured it was worth while to break in...they were right! Hopefully Karma REALLY is a bitch!

WOW, Sorry to hear that! Glad to see you are getting reimbursed for it.

How do you insure camera equipment?
