Default Help - my daughter needs a job.

We live in North Jersey, and my daughter just graduated from college with a degree in communications and advertising and a minor in graphic design. If anyone knows of a company that could use her in the the NY / NJ / PA / CT area I sure would appreciate a lead. Thanks.

She just graduated from Susquehanna University, where she went because of the excellend graphic design program. But after two years she decided she really did not want to do that - kids (argh).

I have a b.s. in mathematics which is all but useless (apparently) if you want to do something other than teaching. So, if anyone is looking to hand out jobs...

My wife had a degree in engineering, which had lots of math. So, she used that math skill to take the actuarial exams and became an actuary many years ago. She is now chief Actuary and SR VP for an insurance company -- so take the math degree and apply it by becoming an actuary.

She should do like the rest of us...get online and apply for everything she can...get the resume out there. Don't expect any favors out there. Jobs are tough to find. However, with her degree (mine is communications as well) she has TONS of avenues. Tell her to think outside the box.

Well that can work, but it is not the best way. When you do that you are sending your resume in with hundreds if not thousands of others. That is just a numbers game. Most good jobs are found by word of mouth and by referels by contacts. That is why I am asking for some help here. You stand a much better chance if someone can make an introduction for you.

BTW - she and all her friends have been doing as you suggest for months, only one got a job, and my daughter only got one interview out of that process. Its a very time wasting and demoralizing process. I am sure you have heard the phrase "it not what you know its who you know". In these economic times that is all more the case.

Well, if all else fails, you can always let her borrow one of your cameras and she can become a wedding photographer. I heard there's a stack of easy money to be made

Seriously however, I know a guy who runs a Media Management company and works closely with New York Pudding. He's no Ari Gold, but I can see what's up if the City is within bounds..

Sorry for probably an obvious question, but did she research the career she wants to get in and companies that are in the area?
If so, then sending resumes to those companies, showing experience and education actually works and helps.
