Indoor show photography

Can anyone help? I am due to shoot a children's dance show and was hoping to do it without the use of a flash. I did this last year and had to position myself behind the audience which was really far back, also my flash gun annoyed some of the audience. I was wondering whether i could discretely position myself just infront of the stage without a flash. I have Nikon D70, with a standard lens (Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5) and a zoom Sigma 28-200 mm). After reading about low light photography (on this fantastic website!!) i was wondering whether to purchase a faster lens eg Nikkor 50mm f1.4. Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks

I think you would be well served with the 50 f1.4 in the enviornment you describe.
