Default Europe Airport Travel Question

Hi All,
We will be sending our college son to study in Germany this summer. Does anyone have any advice about carrying his camera equipment with him on the plane. How about airports as regards to customs, insurance for the camera etc.?

As long as his camera bag fits the standard international size requirements (or any specific restrictions relevant to the airline he travels on, which should be available on their website or with any ticket information), I'd say it's best to take his camera kit (or at least the most valuable/fragile stuff) as hand luggage. The security people may want to check the camera, but that'll be to make sure that it's a genuine camera, and not some kind of IED made to look like a camera.

Personally, I always carry my camera as hand luggage, and I've never ever had a problem with it. If I need to make extra space in my bag, then I'll sometimes pack the spare body in my hold luggage, along with the flashgun, spare batteries and other bits and bobs.

As far as insurance is concerned, the only way to be sure is for him to check the insurance policy that covers his camera kit at the moment, and make sure it covers it all for overseas travel, particularly with an extended stay (since he's going to be away studying - some policies only cover what would be classed as a holiday).

Russ.
